The Dominus Estate was established in 1983 by Christian Moueix, of Château Pétrus fame. Situated on the famed Napanook vineyard, the estate has been the source of fruit for some of the finest Napa Valley wines, including the legendary early Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignons. The vineyard’s history can be traced back to Napa Valley’s early days, when in 1838 George Yount first planted grapevines there. Today, this historic vineyard produces three wines, with the Bordeaux blend Dominus being the flagship.
‘Dominus’ roughly translates from Latin to ‘lord of the estate’, a name chosen to demonstrate a longstanding commitment to the land. Focused on values of quality, tradition and innovation, the Dominus team shares a vision of producing distinctive wines that are expressive of the Napanook terroir. Click HERE to take an aerial fly-by of the vineyard and winery, designed by award-winning architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron.
The vineyard is entirely dry-farmed, encouraging the vines to draw on the land’s unique geology. The viticulture and winemaking are undertaken meticulously in the Bordeaux style, producing wines that are pure, balanced and complex. Restraint throughout the process of grape selection, fermentation, and ageing helps preserve the character of the fruit. The resulting wines convey the strong personality of this historic vineyard and have huge potential for ageing.
"Dominus, which was profoundly misunderstood by California wine critics from his first release, has turned out to be one of the bright, shining superstars of Napa. And even the older vintages, which even Moueix is quick to criticize, have aged beautifully and can be stunning wines. However, there is no question that since the early 1990s, Moueix has been flirting with perfection in many vintages." - Robert Parker
