As the 2021 campaign in Burgundy draws to a close, it's clear to see that the vintage was, as expected, a challenging one in the region. Unfavourable growing conditions led to some producers losing over 80% of their crops.

Due to the low yields, producers were forced to push prices to cover their costs. With release prices up 25% on average, older vintages in the secondary market are now looking more and more attractive, and it's one such bottling from Burgundy's Domaine Marc Morey that we have for you today.
As noted by the Wine Advocate, Domaine Marc Morey has been "quietly going about producing some of Chassagne's finest whites" for the last hundred years. Upon his return from fighting in WW1, Fernand Morey founded the estate in 1919. Marc Morey took over in 1944 following his father's death, with the holdings growing over subsequent generations. Today the estate is run by Marc's granddaughter, Sabine Mollard, who has promoted the virtues of lutte raisonée, or sustainable viticulture, in all of her vineyards, ensuring only the very best grapes reach her wines, with minimal intervention, using natural or organic treatments only when absolutely necessary.

"Sabine Mollard is one of the unsung heroes in Chassagne-Montrachet... extremely consistent in recent years and a bit of a "hidden secret" - so just keep it between us." Neal Martin - Vinous

Marc Morey is the only domaine that farms and bottles the 2.1-hectare premier cru En Virondot site. The vineyard is one of the highest in Chassagne-Montrachet at 350 meters. Beneath the shallow topsoil, the vines sits on a bed of chalk that imparts minerality and texture to the wines.

Offered at global lowest price. Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru En Virondot 2018 comes "highly recommended" from Vinous' Neal Martin, who awards 92-94 points. Decanter's Tim Atkin goes one further and scores it a well-deserved 95 out of 100.

The wines from En Virondot have the greatest aging potential of all Marc Morey premier cru bottlings, and the 2018 vintage has just entered its drinking window, with a good decade or more ahead of it.

This wine is in stock and available for immediate delivery, so do let me know if you would like to order while our limited stocks remain.

£350 (6x75cl) IB

95 Points | Tim Atkin, Decanter

Set in an isolated position on the slope above the village, En Virondot is the highest Chassagne premier cru, at 350 metres. A Marc Morey exclusive, it's a remarkable site that comes into its own in hotter years. Pithy and taut, it's chiselled, sculpted, knife-edge stuff with stylish oak and impressive focus and persistence.

92-94 Points | Neal Martin, Vinous
The 2018 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru has a knockout bouquet of intense, beautifully defined citrus fruit, orange blossom and licorice aromas. The palate is very well balanced, the 25% new oak neatly folded into energetic citrus fruit that dovetails into a very concentrated, persistent finish. This comes highly recommended.
