Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La ChapelleToday I am very pleased to offer a small selection of rare, large format bottles of Hermitage La Chapelle, sourced directly from the cellars of Paul Jaboulet in Tain Hermitage. Paul Jaboulet Aine is one of the legendary producers in the Rhone and is responsible for some of the top wines ever produced (1961,1978 and 1990 La Chapelle to name a few). Since the Frey family have taken over and with investment in the vineyards and winery, they are making stunning wines. Strong back-to-back vintages in 2009 (98 JD) and 2010 (97+ JD) signalled a return to form with more recent vintages… more…

Today I am pleased to offer a wine from one of Rioja Alta’s oldest and most esteemed estates, Lopez de Heredia. Established in 1877 they have built a devoted following for their elegant, stylish wines, the flagship of which is their single vineyard Vina Tondonia Reserva. One might refer to the style of their wines as traditional, but certainly not in a derogatory sense. While they eschew the use of new French oak or extreme, over-extracted, over-ripe, high alcohol styles, tradition to them means a resulting wine that is a classic, finesseful Rioja, with low alcohol, (around 13%), excellent freshness and balance. Both their 2006 and 2007 received excellent reviews from the Wine Advocate with the 2007 receiving the highest score given for Tondonia Reserva… more…

First planted in 1992 amid skepticism that grapes could ripen at such an altitude, it’s now evident almost thirty years later that Nicolas Catena was a visionary ahead of his time. And while some traditionalists might raise an eyebrow to Adrianna Vineyard’s informal designation among locals as “South America’s Grand Cru”, the recent vintages Catena has released from this site have been nothing short of spectacular… more…

Perano Gran Selezione 2016A wine which caught my eye from Marchesi de Frescobaldi is the relatively newly acquired Tenuta Perano property. Buying this vineyard site was a very smart move, especially thanks to the gleaming white Albarese rocky soil present in the vineyard. The soil gives an unmistakable mineral note to the wine that adds sharpness, focus and brilliant linearity. With two vintages reviewed, Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate) speaks very highly of this wine. Comments like “a game-changer for Frescobaldi” and “This wine is a delight to behold” I think it is a wine to follow. Added to this and unlike a lot of 2016 vintage Italian wines, this is in its drinking window of 2021 – 2035.

With this in mind, I am very pleased to offer the following…  more…
