Freshly arrived into AMFW is another fantastic offering from Chassagne's ever-popular Domaine Marc Morey & Fils, in the form of their premier cru white, En Virondot 2019.

As noted by the Wine Advocate, Domaine Marc Morey has been "quietly going about producing some of Chassagne's finest whites" for the last hundred years. Upon his return from fighting in WW1, Fernand Morey founded the estate in 1919. Marc Morey took over in 1944 following his father's death, with the holdings growing over subsequent generations.

Today the estate is run by Marc's granddaughter, Sabine Mollard, who has promoted the virtues of sustainable viticulture in all of her vineyards, ensuring only the very best grapes reach her wines, with minimal intervention, using natural or organic treatments only when absolutely necessary.
"Sabine Mollard is one of the unsung heroes in Chassagne-Montrachet... extremely consistent in recent years and a bit of a "hidden secret" - so just keep it between us." Neal Martin - Vinous

Marc Morey is the only domaine that farms and bottles the 2.1-hectare premier cru En Virondot site. The vineyard is one of the highest in Chassagne-Montrachet at 350 meters. Beneath the shallow topsoil, the vines sit on a bed of chalk that imparts distinctive minerality and texture to the wines.

Sabine Mollard says this vineyard has the greatest ageing potential of all her premier cru bottlings, a claim backed up by Burghound's Allen Meadows in the tasting notes below. The 2019 En Virondot is also included in Burghound's 'Sweet Spot' list, commending wines that offer solid quality in every respect and excellent value for money.

92-94 Points | Neal Martin, Vinous
The 2019 Chassagne-Montrachet Virondot 1er Cru, one of the domaine’s strongest cuvées, was matured in 25% new oak. This is backward and a little broody at first, yet it is beautifully defined with its mineralité already tangible, those shallow soils on limestone can almost be smelled! The palate is very well balanced and packed full of energy, touches of sour lemon and orange rind, full of tension with a persistent finish. Just a fantastic Chassagne.

93 Points | Burghound
Cooler and airier aromas of restrained green fruit, essence of lemon zest and lovely spice nuances give way to rich, concentrated and almost painfully intense medium weight flavors that brim with minerality on the balanced, clean and moderately dry finale. This too could use better depth but Virondot seemingly always ages extremely well. *Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!
