Prophet’s Rock is emerging as one of the star wineries of New Zealand’s Central Otago. Well-travelled winemaker Paul Pujol is making some seriously impressive wines from his two neighbouring vineyards in Bendigo, the Home Vineyard and Rocky Point.

Paul cut his teeth at Seresin in Marlborough before heading to France where he first worked in the Languedoc region before seeing through a vintage at Bourgeois in Chavignon, Sancerre. He then moved over to Alsace where he worked at prestigious Kuentz-Bas, soon becoming chief winemaker. Notably he was the first non-French chief winemaker in Alsace. After Kuentz-Baz Paul spent several years in Oregon at boutique organic producer Lemelson Vineyards before taking all his acquired knowledge with him back to New Zealand, joining Prophet’s Rock as chief winemaker in 2005.

In 2009 Paul was invited for what would be a seminal vintage for him at world renowned Domaine Comte Georges de Vogue in Burgundy. There he struck up a close friendship with De Vogue winemaker Francois Millet, ultimately leading to their collaboration on the Cuvée Aux Antipodes. This wine is a meeting of two hemispheres, where the Old World and the New World find common ground with a passion for Pinot Noir and the beauty of terroir. Paul allows Francois to work the vinification in his own special way, even to the point of buying the same equipment that De Vogue use in Burgundy.

The Cuvée Aux Antipodes grapes are sourced from the renowned Home Vineyard located on a high-elevation, steep glacial terrace. This stunning site has clay and pedogenic lime soil, featuring schist, chalk and quartz, lending minerality to the wines. James Suckling awards this 2019 iteration a well-deserved 96 points describing the cuvee as “so pure, mineral and focused with a very fine texture”. Though drinking well now, this wine will cellar beautifully for the next 10+ years. With case numbers (just 290 produced for the world) and access extremely limited, this is a highly in-demand wine.

“A fragrant nose of dark cherries, blueberries, dried flowers and spices. Crushed stones and tea leaves, too. Medium-bodied with tightly knit tannins and bright acidity. So pure, mineral and focused with a very fine texture. Drink or hold.”
