Widely recognised by critics around the world as the original white Super Tuscan and as one of Italy’s greatest white wines, Querciabella’s Batar is described by Jancis Robinson as “the most ambitious Pinot Blanc outside of Burgundy.”

The Burgundian style runs deep at Querciabella, in fact, their Pinot Blanc is a clone from Henri Gouges’ vineyards and the Batar is named in homage to Bâtard Montrachet, a favourite wine of Giuseppe Castiglioni, Querciabella’s founder.

Sebastiano Cossia Castiglioni – Giuseppe’s son – converted the estate to organic viticulture in 1988, making Querciabella one of the first wineries in Italy to employ this practice. Under his leadership, Querciabella became known as one of Italy’s best and most innovative wine producers by the turn of the 20th century.

Vinous’ Antonio Galloni has long been a fan of the Castiglioni family’s work saying “Querciabella stands head and shoulders above any other estate in Chianti Classico. It’s as simple as that”.

This 2018 vintage of Querciabella Batar marks the wine’s 30th anniversary and, as usual, delivers richness, finesse and complexity, like the best of Burgundy, but with a distinct Tuscan accent.

James Suckling describes the 2018 Batar as “fantastic”, awarding 95 points. Antonio Galloni notes “a wine of total precision and nuance, the 2018 is simply exquisite today”.

With only approximately 2200 cases made, this wine is highly sought-after by enthusiasts the world over and offers a Mediterranean option to lovers of white Burgundy.

50% Chardonnay with 50% Pinot Blanc and matured 9 months in 20% new French oak, this wine is drinking well now and will continue to evolve for the next 20 years or more.

Due in next month so do let me know if you would like to order, and I can confirm, subject to remaining unsold.
