The phrase ‘cult producer’ is one we hear a lot, especially when it comes to Napa Valley wines. To qualify as a true cult producer, you need to be specialised in producing exceptional wines that are both in-demand and limited in volume, often with a unique angle and fanatic following. Napa’s Silver Oak is precisely that.
Born in 1972, Silver Oak’s simple philosophy was to focus production on only one varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon, and do it better than the rest. Kickstarting the cult producer trend, Silver Oaks’s inaugural release numbered only 1000 cases at a then-unheard-of price, $6 a bottle, more than double that of many other Napa fine wines.
Over time, Silver Oak developed a loyal following. They were one of the first wineries to encourage their fans to join them on release day, which saw customers camped out overnight to ensure they could purchase the latest releases, further adding to the cult producer hype.
Silver Oak produces Cabernet Sauvignon from two appellations. Silver Oak Napa Valley derives its fruit from both owned and contracted vineyards and is made entirely at their Oakville winery. Since 1994, small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot have been added to their Napa blend to create complexity and softness.
Silver Oak also produces Cabernet from their Alexander Valley vineyards. The key to the success of this wine, and every wine they make, is the blending and subsequent ageing in American oak barrels then bottles. Over four-and-a-half years, the wine’s flavours and textures meld with one another and the wood’s delicate qualities to create cohesion found only in the world’s top wines.
Now enjoying its 50th anniversary, Silver Oak is one of California’s most iconic producers. Its two wineries are considered the “greenest wineries in the world”, having demonstrated a commitment to sustainability long before such objectives became the norm. It’s also one of the few wineries to possess their own oak cooperage.
