Producing what Robert Parker calls, ‘the elixirs of dreams’, Sine Qua Non is the ultimate garage winery success story, crafting some of the world’s most collectable cuvees year-after-year.
Founder Manfred Krankl emigrated from Austria to the U.S where he opened the finest artisanal bakery in Los Angeles, La Brea Bakery, as well as one of the area’s top Mediterranean-styled restaurants, Campania. In 1994 Krankl and his wife Elaine decided to turn their focus and perfectionism to wine and purchased fruit from three leading California vineyards – Alban, Stolpman, and Bien Nacido.
From their “Mad Max- junkyard dog sort of winery” (RP) in the back-streets of Ventura they produced just four barrels of their maiden vintage, The Queen Of Spades. This predominantly Syrah based wine was the first in what would become a world-renowned and highly sought-after list of wines, primarily produced from the Syrah or Grenache varietals.
The winery has now outgrown its humble beginnings, moving to a purpose-built facility on one of Krankl’s four estates, however his eccentric and brilliant approach to wine-making remains, and is one of the fundamental reasons why these wines are amongst the most collectable in the world.
Although Sine Qua Non is focused on Rhone style wines, they refuse to dogmatically follow tradition for the sake of tradition. Alongside the typical Rhone Syrah and Grenache, supported by Mourvedre, Roussanne and Viognier, they’ve also utilised non-Rhone varietals. Typified by very low yields, no two vintages are ever named the same, and each year the shape of the bottle changes along with the label, which Krankl designs himself. Whilst this can be confusing, the unique nature of these wines is key, with the bottles themselves considered collectors’ items.
The style of the wines is unapologetically full bodied with incredible concentration. Despite all of the richness, Krankl enables the varietal character and terroir to shine, with a nuance and quality one might expect from the embodiment of a cult producer.
We are pleased to be able to offer a selection of vintages from this trailblazing producer including their signature Grenache and Syrah as well as their last ever Pinot Noir vintage ‘Over & Out’.
These wines are only released to their mailing list customers and there is currently at least a 9 year wait to join that list. This is a rare opportunity to secure these wines immediately, direct from mailing list subscribers.
