Just over a decade ago, Pierre Henri-Morel partnered with the renowned Michel Chapoutier to purchase select plots in the Southern Rhône. These lieux-dits would ultimately prove capable of producing top-flight Châteauneuf-du-Pape which showcases the different soils and different expressions of Grenache across the appellation.

Located adjacent to the legendary vineyards of Rayas, this is the very best terroir that Châteauneuf-du-Pape has to offer. Robert Parker once said that the wines produced here were “similar to a very good vintage of Rayas”, yet are offered at a fraction of the cost.

Pierre Henri-Morel

Chapoutier’s long-standing and extensive knowledge of the Southern Rhône laid the foundation for Henri-Morel to work with excellent raw materials, creating bottles of wine that drink far above their price-point yet are still relatively unknown. Case in point, the terrific 2019 Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Lieu Dit Pignan”.

At an early stage the wine already notched an impressive 95-97 score from Jeb Dunnuck, who describes “full-bodied richness, a plush, seamless texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish”, and goes on to say he “can’t wait to taste it from bottle”.

At just £190 per case-of-six IB, this under-the-radar wine offers excellent value for money, especially when you consider a case of Rayas at today’s market price will cost you upwards of £6000.

The 2019 Lieu-Dit Pignan is already drinking beautifully and will certainly take on more of a secondary profile in the coming years, cruising to another 10+ years of peak drinkability.

Jeb Dunnuck / 95-97 points:

From a great terroir located in the middle of the appellation, just beside the Rayas lieu-dit, the 2019 Châteauneuf Du Pape Lieu-Dit Pignan should be a rock star. Deep purple, with a gorgeous nose of wild strawberries, blueberries, candied violets, and orange blossom, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a plush, seamless texture, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. I can’t wait to taste it from the bottle.
