Harlan Estate was founded in 1984 by the visionary Bill Harlan and is now one of the most sought-after wines of the Napa Valley. For 37 years Bill has been pursuing his mission to create a “first growth” of California in the hills of Oakland, a mission he may well have achieved according to The Wine Advocate’s Robert Parker:
“These wines possess all the elements of greatness – individuality, power combined with elegance, extraordinary complexity, remarkable aging potential, and compelling richness without ponderousness” – Robert Parker
The Harlan Estate shares the same climatic characteristics as neighbouring Martha’s Vineyard and Beckstoffer To-Kalon, yet occupies a higher position on the hillside where overall cooler temperatures and greater swings between daytime and night-time temperatures encourage ripening whilst preserving acid. The estate’s early vineyard development began with just six acres. Today this cult estate’s planting is essentially complete, with nearly forty acres under vine to the classic varietals: cabernet sauvignon, merlot, cabernet franc, and petit verdot.
Harlan is maybe best known for their flagship Harlan Estate wine, however, the second selection from the estate, The Maiden, is made to the same exacting high standards, producing a highly detailed wine, faithful to the vineyard’s pedigree. Accordingly, this Bordeaux blend’s resemblance to her “big sister” is unmistakable, yet The Maiden is offered at a more affordable price point.
“nearly as good as Harlan Estate, so that at less than one-third the price, it’s a comparative bargain” – Wine Enthusiast
The attention to detail lavished on The Maiden doesn’t stop with the wine itself. As is the same for the Harlan Estate, the labels used on The Maiden bottles are also printed on banknote paper by the 250-year-old American Bank Note Company, who also printed the United States currency before the U.S. Treasury was established.
Today we are delighted to be able to offer a number of Harlan The Maiden back vintages. With a bit of age under their belt, these wines are ready to drink now or will happily cellar for the next couple of decades or more:
