Today I am very pleased to offer a small selection of rare, large format bottles of Hermitage La Chapelle, sourced directly from the cellars of Paul Jaboulet in Tain Hermitage.
Paul Jaboulet Aine is one of the legendary producers in the Rhone and is responsible for some of the top wines ever produced (1961,1978 and 1990 La Chapelle to name a few). Since the Frey family have taken over and with investment in the vineyards and winery, they are making stunning wines. Strong back-to-back vintages in 2009 (98 JD) and 2010 (97+ JD) signalled a return to form with more recent vintages, the 2017 La Chapelle (99 JD), the 2015 vintage (100 JD) and the highly regarded 2012 vintage (97 JD), they are not to be missed.
Each vintage Jaboulet bottle a handful of bottles in over 300cl formats. Most get sold En Primeur and with age command a premium over the higher production bottle sizes. These bottles are rarely seen for resale. With this in mind I am very pleased to offer the below formats and vintages in single OWC cases (with proof tags on the bottles for provenance) direct from the winery.
Offer as follows:
Case 1 x 1200cl, 2017 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1925 per case IB.
99 points…..”Reminding me of the 2009 La Chapelle (which is a personal favourite), the brilliant 2017 Hermitage La Chapelle knocks it out of the park with its massive, opulent personality. Notes of smoked black fruits, scorched earth, burning embers, and graphite as well as subtle background meatiness flow to a monster of a Hermitage that has full-bodied richness, incredible depth of fruit, and an overwhelming, sexy style that’s already impossible to resist. Do your best to hide bottles for 4-5 years, but it’s going to evolve for 40 years or more. There are roughly 2,000 cases of this elixir, and every Syrah lover out there should have a bottle (or more) in their cellar”- Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
Case 1 x 1200cl, 2016 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1995 per case IB. (97 JD, 96 WA)
Case 1 x 900cl, 2015 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £2220 per case IB.
Case 1 x 600cl, 2015 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1480 per case IB.
100 points….”Lastly, and a legendary wine in the making, the 2015 Hermitage La Chapelle is reminiscent of the 1990 with its full-bodied, opulently, sexy, yet concentrated style. Offering sensational notes of blackcurrants, smoked herbs, beef blood, and chocolate, it’s a huge yet elegant wine that has masses of sweet tannin, incredible purity and finesse, and a killer finish. It’s the finest wine from this estate in close to 30 years. Hats off to Caroline Frey and Jacques Desvernois! “- Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
Case 1 x 1200cl, 2014 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1650 per case IB. (94 JD, 94 WA)

Case 1 x 1200cl, 2012 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1775 per case IB.
97 points….”I’ve always loved the 2012 Hermitage La Chapelle, and this is the first vintage where winemaker Caroline Frey feels that you can see the full effect of the shift to organic viticulture. Its deep purple colour is followed by a ripe, full-bodied, sexy wine loaded with notions of bouquet garni, toasted bread, spiced meats, and assorted darker fruits. Concentrated, structured, and perfectly balanced, it’s a magical Hermitage that has some accessibility today yet will cruise for another 25-30 years.”- Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
Case 1 x 1200cl, 2011 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1750 per case IB. (95 JD, 95 WA)
Case 1 x 1200cl, 2010 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £2895 per case IB.
97+ points….”The 2010 Hermitage La Chapelle is a big, inky, blockbuster styled effort that’s just now starting to enter its drink window. A huge perfume of black (and some blue) fruits, rendered bacon fat, iron, and graphite notes all lead to a powerful, full-bodied Hermitage that has incredibly purity and depth, awesome concentration, and building yet polished tannins. It’s an incredible wine that is still going to benefit from another 4-5 years of bottle age, and I suspect it will see its 50th birthday in fine form “- Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
Case 1 x 600cl, 2009 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £1595 per case IB.
Case 1 x 300cl, 2009 Paul Jaboulet Aine, Hermitage La Chapelle @ £710 per case IB.
98 points…..”In the same ballpark as the 2010, yet in a dramatically different style, the 2009 Hermitage La Chapelle is pure sex in a glass, and its ruby/purple color is followed by mammoth-sized notes of crème de cassis, black raspberries, cured meats, toasted spices, and dried flowers. Opulent, full-bodied, deep, and layered, it flirts with perfection and is a magical wine to enjoy over the coming 40-50 years or more. “- Jeb Dunnuck, jebdunnuck.com
