Harlan Estate was founded in 1984 by the visionary Bill Harlan and is now one of the most sought-after wines of the Napa Valley. For 37 years Bill has been pursuing his mission to create a “first growth” of California in the hills of Oakland.

The estate shares the same climatic characteristics as neighbouring Martha’s Vineyard and Beckstoffer To-Kalon, yet occupies a higher position on a hillside where overall cooler temperatures and greater swings between day and night-time temperatures encourages ripening whilst preserving acid. The estate’s early vineyard development began with just six acres. Today this cult estate has nearly forty acres under vine to the classic varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

“These wines possess all the elements of greatness – individuality, power combined with elegance, extraordinary complexity, remarkable aging potential, and compelling richness without ponderousness.”  Robert Parker (The Wine Advocate)

The Maiden represents the second selection from the estate. It is a highly complex wine, faithful to the vineyard’s pedigree and exacting high standards. Accordingly, the resemblance to her “big sister” is unmistakable, yet is offered at a more affordable price-point.

Harlan’s wine labels have an interesting story too. They are designed and printed by the 250-year-old American Bank Note Company, who used to print the United States currency before the U.S. Treasury was established. The label is even printed on banknote paper, creating an interesting piece of art in itself.

The winery itself has a link to America’s Western past, built from repurposed timber and salvaged sandstone blocks from an abandoned historic railroad building in Nevada. Every detail, from vineyards to label to winery design, reflects a relentless drive for quality at Harlan Estate.

Only about 1800-2000 cases are produced each year, and distribution is very selective. We are happy to be able to offer a selection of both Harlan Estate and The Maiden covering a number of vintages, in stock and ready to deliver:
