Randy Dunn established his reputation as a leading Cabernet Sauvignon producer during his time as chief winemaker at the renowned Caymus estate during the 1970s. Since 1979 Randy Dunn and his Dunn Vineyards have been producing blockbuster Cabernet Sauvignons from their Howell Mountain winery.
The vineyards are situated at 1400 feet elevation, so even when it is cool and foggy on the valley floor, it’s sunny and breezy up on the mountain. Growing conditions are cooler than that of Napa’s lower elevations and as such, the grapes need thick skins to survive. It’s these thick skins provide the trademark deep flavours and chewy tannins of Randy’s wines.
Matured in French oak barrels (40% new) for 30 months, these are big wines, dense and massively structured, that require extended bottle ageing. Those who can wait are rewarded with wines that rival the very best Californian Cabernets for aging potential and sheer quality.
Only around 4500 cases are produced by Dunn Vineyards each year, split between the between the Howell Mountain and Napa Valley appellations. Today we are delighted to offer a number of back-vintages from Dunn Vineyards’ flagship Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
“These Cabernets are for the patient, but make no mistake about it, in top vintages the Howell Mountain is one of the great wines, not just of California, but of the world.” – Antonio Galloni
Of the Dunn Vineyards Howell Mountain, Robet Parker once said “this is an outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon for readers with patience, good genes for longevity, or the foresight to purchase it for their children”, but with many years aging already under their belt, there is no need to wait. These wines can be enjoyed now or will happily continue to cellar for the next decade or more.
