It’s no secret that South America has become a veritable hotspot for some of the most interesting and best value wines currently available on the market. Names like Concha y Toro, Lapostolle, Errázuriz, and Montes continue to push the limits for top-flight wines, while making it clear that serious quality and exceptional value can most definitely coexist.
Originally founded in 1987 by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray, there was little indication at the time that Viña Montes would become a benchmark for Chilean wines. The earliest releases from Montes were geared toward wines meant for early consumption, but the two visionaries saw the vast potential held by much of the untapped land in the Colchagua Valley. They introduced the Alpha M Bordeaux blend in 1996 to rave reviews before turning their attention to Syrah a few years later with their inaugural release of Montes Folly in 2000. These two wines alone would have been enough to make Montes a serious player in South America and beyond, both have established a terrific track record over the last twenty years. The introduction of the Carmenère-based Purple Angel in 2005 merely solidified the Montes reputation and now gives them three serious wines that appeal to fans of New-World and Old-World wines alike.
We are very pleased to offer this highly rated trio of Montes wines from the 2018 vintage. The Alpha M is based on 80% Cabernet Sauvignon and rounded out by Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot in lesser percentages, bringing a New-World interpretation of the classic Left Bank wines from Bordeaux. The Folly comes from the first Syrah vines planted in the Colchagua Valley while the Purple Angel is a celebration of Chile’s signature Carmenère from which Montes has achieved great success. A testament to the incredible diversity available from across Chile, these distinctive wines can be enjoyed upon release or cellared with ease for 10-15 years.

Black fruit, dried herbs, spices and earthy undertones. Hints of bark and cedar, too. Full body with firm tannins that are fleshy in texture and provide excellent structure. Layered with a fruity core. Savory and succulent finish. This needs time to come together and mellow a bit, but very serious. Try after 2024.
