High atop any list of the world’s greatest white wine producers is Zind-Humbrecht, the twelfth-generation winemaking estate that stands as one of the most historic names in France. Located near the village of Turckheim in the heart of Alsace, the Humbrecht family has been cultivating vines in an unbroken chain from father-to-son since 1620 before merging with the neighbouring Zind family winery in 1959 to create Domaine Zind-Humbrecht as we know it today. Now considered one of the archetypes for the region, Zind-Humbrecht owns a little under 100 acres of Grand Cru vineyards and other parcels where they biodynamically farm all the major grape varieties of Alsace. Currently led by the dynamic Olivier Humbrecht, just the second winemaker in the world to attain Master of Wine (MW) status, Zind-Humbrecht is renowned for wines that marry concentration with purity and focus that allows the personality and terroir of their individual vineyards to shine.
The family’s most prized grapes hail from a small plot designated as “Clos Saint Urbain” within the Grand Cru vineyard of Rangen de Thann in the southernmost portion of Alsace. Rising steeply above the village of Thann, this 13-acre plot surrounds a little chapel dedicated to Saint Urbain, the patron saint of winegrowers. This revered site is planted almost equally to Pinot Gris and Riesling atop volcanic rocks and sedimentary sandstone. Few vineyards in the world can rival the quality of Clos Saint Urbain and it continues to deliver wines of incredible structure and longevity at prices that remain extremely reasonable for a Grand Cru of this calibre.
