Hailing from what is arguably the most sought-after address in Napa Valley, the Chappellet’s Pritchard Hill Estate has been producing what Robert Parker calls “brilliant wines” since 1967. Pioneers of Pritchard Hill, Chappellet is recognized as one of the great Napa Valley wineries, and one of the few which remains family-owned. Today, the second generation is committed to continuing the vision of their parents, Donn and Molly Chappellet. Together, the siblings are dedicated to maintaining sustainable farming techniques, a relentless focus on wine quality, respect for Pritchard Hill’s natural beauty and the preservation of family ownership for generations to come.

“Brilliant wines have emerged from this showcase estate high on Pritchard Hill, which is producing some of the most exciting Cabernets coming out of Napa.” – Robert Parker, Wine Advocate

The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is composed of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Petit Verdot. It was aged in 100% new French oak for 22 months. The alcohol weighed in at 14.5%. Deep garnet-purple in color, it charges out of the gate with bold expressions of warm cassis, wild blueberries and black raspberries, plus hints of chocolate box, menthol, tapenade, smoked meats and pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is bursting with vibrant black fruits, framed by fantastically ripe, fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

“We’re really excited by the 2018s,” Phillip Corallo-Titus, winemaker for Chappellet, recently informed me. “2018 was a big vintage, but there are examples like 1982 in Bordeaux where high-yielding vintages were also great. Our vineyard manager, Dave Perio, knows what to do when a big vintage comes through. It is all about multiple passes, thinning out clusters when they are just coming in, taking off the wings, then the green thinning. The final move was to take off another three clusters per vine. Dave’s good about taking flak for all the fruit on the ground! ‘Don’t look on the ground,’ he says, ‘look on the vine.’ That was a constant theme for us—lightening the load. The whole crop moved with uniformity. We had a big crop. We had lots of options for blending—great wines and lots of ‘em. I’m the last one to declare a vintage to be great, but we knew we had something very special.” Indeed, Chappellet has done an amazing job with capturing the spirit of this bright, vibrant vintage. These wines absolutely shimmer with energy!

98 points | Jeb Dunnuck
Always one of top wines in a vintage, the 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another gorgeous wine with a more plush, supple texture that hides solid underlying structure and tannins. Beautiful notes of blueberries, new leather, camphor, violets, and smoked tobacco all flow to a full-bodied, seamless, gorgeously textured beauty that’s very much in the style of the vintage. Possessing remarkable purity, flawless balance, and building tannins, give bottles 4-5 years of bottle age, count yourself lucky, and enjoy over the following 25+ years.
