Founded by George Fistonich in 1961, the meteoric rise of Villa Maria has been an unstoppable march, and today this highly decorated estate flies the flag for New Zealand wines worldwide.
At Villa Maria, they believe that the secret to success does not lie in chasing awards but in focusing on making superior quality wine. Get that right, and the accolades will follow. This has undoubtedly been the case with the winery being named as; one of the World’s 50 Great Wine Producers by Wine Spectator, Most Admired Brand from New Zealand by the renowned Drinks International Magazine and the title of New World Winery of the Year by Wine Enthusiast Magazine.
“Villa Maria is undoubtedly one of New Zealand’s great success stories” – Joe Czerwinski, The Wine Advocate.
Villa Maria produces a broad range of wines at various price points, at the top of which sits the single vineyard Keltern Chardonnay. Planted in 1999 and located in the Hawkes Bay region, the Keltern Vineyard has established itself as one of New Zealand’s premier sites for Chardonnay.
Today, we’re pleased to offer the very well-priced Villa Maria Keltern Chardonnay 2020. Hailing from what Villa Maria describes as “a sensational season”, hand-harvesting of perfect fruit enabled a minimal intervention winemaking approach, allowing Keltern’s unique characteristics to shine.
Scoring a fantastic 97 points from Decanter’s Cameron Douglas, he describes a wine that is “complex, detailed and seductive”. Vinous’ Rebecca Gibb is also a fan noting the attention to detail that has gone into this wine when saying, “it’s clearly had a lot of TLC in both the vineyard and the winery”.
At just £270 IB for 12 bottles, you get a lot of points for your pound with the Keltern Chardonnay.
Due to arrive later in the summer, this wine is delicious young but will happily cellar for the next decade more.

97 Points | Cameron Douglas, Decanter
Fantastic bouquet with piercing aromas of ripe stone fruits and gunflint, fresh white-fleshed orchard fruits, fine new barrel scents and soft baking spice moments. Complex, detailed and seductive. Even better on the palate with a pure fruit core showcasing flavours of grapefruit and stone fruits, citrus pith and wet pebble minerality. Youthful, complex and vibrant. Drinking Window 2022 – 2028
96 Points | Bob Cambell, Real Review
Concentrated, flagship Chardonnay with citrus, oyster-shell, struck-flint, nectarine and nutty yeast lees flavours. A high-energy wine, with deliciously tangy acidity promoting a lengthy finish. Delicious now but with good cellaring potential. Drinking Window: 2021 – 2027
95 Points | Rebecca Gibb, Vinous
The 2020 Chardonnay Keltern is taking no prisoners in 2020. It is an uncompromising, firm expression. Concentrated and textural, it remains clean, taut and athletic, pulled through from the starting gun to the finish line by a lime-like citrusy acidity alongside flinty notes and classy new-wood-derived hazelnuts (barrel fermentation). It’s clearly had a lot of TLC in both the vineyard and the winery, but it’s a little uptight and urgent at the moment; patience will be rewarded. Drinking Window: 2023 – 2033
