Following on from our pre-arrival offer of Lismore Estate’s 2020 range, we are happy to say we were able to secure an additional allocation of the ever-popular Lismore Estate Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve Estate 2020 which is now in stock and ready for immediate delivery. Likened to a Premier Cru Burgundy by Vinous’ Neal Martin – yet kinder on the purse strings – vintage after vintage this wine continues to impress collectors and critics alike.

The Overberg area of South Africa’s Cape is a land of ice and fire, where nature gives with one hand and takes with another. When Samantha O’Keefe left her native Californian to found Lismore Estate Vineyards in 2000, she chose her Greyton site for the magic combination of perfect terroir and cool climate, where the snow-covered mountains that surround the estate temper the African heat. With extreme diurnal temperature shifts, her wines present a very distinct sense of place and her work has been instrumental in earning Greyton recognition as a legitimate winemaking district.

Towards the end of 2019, this seemingly idyllic environment turned on the winemaker and fire razed to the ground everything that she had worked so hard for. Through great adversity comes great triumph, and we are pleased to say Lismore Estate Vineyards has truly risen from the ashes of its past. Vinous’ Neal Martin agrees, saying “the good news is that despite the hardship and stress, the wines have not suffered one notch. They remain some of the best the Cape has to offer”.

Today we are happy to offer the comeback vintage of the 2020 Lismore Estate Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve Estate which O’Keefe terms as a “wine made in the soil”. The intense citrus notes and the lingering finish are trademarks of Lismore’s specific terroir and the restrained minerality of the Chardonnay is an indication of the cool climate in which it is grown.

Scoring a fantastic 97 points from Winemag’s South African expert critic, Christian Eedes he says, “what a triumph it is… wonderfully well realized, possessing plenty of depth without sacrificing focus”. The praise keeps on coming with Vinous’ Neal Martin stating the wine has, “a glorious bouquet that is Premier Cru Burgundy in quality… an outstanding, world-class Chardonnay”.

This wine is in stock, drinking well now and with a long life ahead of it thanks to at least two decades of cellaring potential, it’s one not to be missed.

Lismore Estate Vineyards Chardonnay Reserve Estate 2020
£185 (6x75cl) IB

97 Points | Christian Eedes, Winemag
Made from own vineyards that survived the fire and what a triumph it is. Matured for 11 months in 500-litre barrels, 40% new. The nose shows white peach, citrus and some struck-match reduction while the palate shows extraordinary concentration and well-integrated acidity before a super-long finish. It’s wonderfully well realized, possessing plenty of depth without sacrificing focus.

95 Points | Neal Martin, Vinous
The 2020 Chardonnay Reserve Estate is the only Reserve wine whose fruit survived the wildfire in 2019. It has a glorious bouquet that is Premier Cru Burgundy in quality, featuring wonderful, brilliantly delineated scents of citrus lemon and orange blossom and hints of black currant leaf. The palate is extremely well balanced, displaying wonderful poise allied with impressive concentration. There’s real depth and substance on the finish (where others have lacked in this vintage). An outstanding, world-class Chardonnay. Drink – 2022 – 2042.
