The Schiavenza winery has been operating in the Serralunga d’Alba area since 1956.

The business was started by the brothers Vittorio and Ugo Alessandria and is now managed by the son-in-law Luciano Pira. In the past the farmhouse with the surrounding lands were owned by the Opera Pia Barolo. The work was carried out by sharecroppers called “schiavenza”: hence the name of the producer. Currently the vineyards extend over approximately ten hectares in the Serralunga d’Alba appellation of which they make several single-vineyard cru wines.

The wine from Schiavenzia that caught my eye being offered today is “Ceretta” The vineyard is situated 400 metres above Sea level right next to Prapo. It has received a very nice review from Monica Larner (The Wine Advocate) and I think with 95 points it represents very good value compared with a lot of its neighbours.

With this in mind and coming directly from the producer, I can offer the following.

Cases 6 x 75cl, 2016 Schiavenza Barolo Cerretta @ £175 per case 6 IB

95 points……..”This wine is a true beauty. In this release of 5,240 bottles, the 2016 Barolo Cerretta takes that Nebbiolo purity and intensity up a significant notch, especially when you compare this cru to Schiavenza’s classic Barolo and its Barolo made with fruit sourced across Serralunga d’Alba. You get a lot of expressive clarity here, with a pristine delivery that puts emphasis on wild berry fruits, blood orange, rusty earth and even a touch of bitter cacao. I love the manner in which all those aromas pile together in such a nicely layered manner.“- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. Drinking 2024-2045

Also available with a lovely review from Monica Larner and coming direct from its producer,

Cases 6 x 75cl, 2016 Cavallotto Barolo Bricco Boschis @ £250 per 6 IB

98 points……”All of these wines from Cavallotto deliver a very floral and perfumed subtext that gives lift and delicate buoyancy to the overall bouquet. This is the Castiglione Falletto magic that shows so well in this classic vintage. The 2016 Barolo Bricco Boschis offers dried cherry, sandalwood, bramble and forest floor. The wine reveals a slightly wild and untamed character that adds to its interest and personality. Overall, this is an elegant wine with a streamlined and elegant finish. The aromas are focused and bright. I can’t wait to taste the Riserva expression from this site when it is released in three years’ time.“- Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate. Drinking 2024-2045
